Foundation Shade Selection Guide

Foundation is the base of all makeup. Learn how to choose the perfect shade for your skin.

Why Foundation Shade Matters

The wrong foundation shade creates a visible line between face and neck, or makes skin look ashy or unnaturally pale. The right shade evens out your complexion while maintaining a natural finish.

Understanding Foundation Undertones

Foundation shades combine depth (brightness level) with undertone.

  • Warm (W / Yellow) — Yellow-toned warmth
  • Cool (C / Pink) — Pink-toned coolness
  • Neutral (N) — Between warm and cool

Self-test: Apply foundation along your jawline. Try 2–3 shades side by side — the one that "disappears" into your skin is your match.

Shade Depth Numbers

  • Fair / Light (13–15) — Very light skin.
  • Light-Medium (20–25) — Slightly lighter than average.
  • Medium (30–35) — Average skin tone range.
  • Tan / Medium-Deep (40–45) — Deeper, olive, or golden tones.
  • Deep (50+) — Rich, dark complexions.

Global Brand Shade Systems

  • MAC NC — "Neutral Cool" actually means warm undertone. NC15 = light warm, NC42 = medium-deep warm.
  • MAC NW — "Neutral Warm" actually means cool undertone.
  • NARS — Uses name + depth number (e.g., "Deauville" Light 4).

Note: MAC's NC/NW labeling is the opposite of what you'd expect. NC = warm, NW = cool.

Seasonal Adjustments

Skin color shifts with seasons. Go half to one shade deeper in summer after tanning, and lighter in winter. Always test in natural daylight for the most accurate match.
